By car
”La Colombaia” is certainly a good starting point for your daily excursions:
indeed we’re very close to Arezzo (26 km), where the first weekend of each
month one of the most famous antiquarian markets of Italy takes place.
Siena and Cortona are both km 45 far, and you can also visit Pienza, Montalcino,
Montepulciano, San Gimignano and Firenze that is 50 km far.
These are all villages
and cities that you can easily reach and then, once back, you can enjoy our
dinner in total relaxation, without spending too much money or being disappointed
by one of the many restaurants for tourists!
There are many itineraries you can follow; we give you some suggestions but you will find
maps and more detailed information once here.
Itinerary 1 (by car):
Chianti Castles to and fro - km 52
The road leading to the Chianti castles starts from Pergine and describes an imaginary ring passing
by Castelnuovo Berardenga, the Chianti, and Montevarchi and coming back to Pergine.
You will admire the most famous vineyards in the world, suggestive villages like San Gusmè,
and historical castles like the castle of Brolio, Vertine, the castle of Meleto, Badia a Coltibuono.
It is possible to taste and buy the excellent Chianti produced by local farms.
Itinerary 2 (by car or bicycle)
Pergine - Castello di Cennina to and fro - km 34
The castle of Cennina was built in 1167 by the Ghibelline Earl Brandaglia Alberigo d'Uguccione
and occupied by the Tarlati, the Ubertini and even the Guidi Earls. The Valdambra, where
Cennina was one of the most relevant strategic sites, was the border between the florentine,
the Arezzo and Siena possessions; for this reason the castle was involved in the wars between
the Guelfa Florence and the Ghibelline Siena and Arezzo, was besieged, destroyed and rebuilt many times.
From the castle you can enjoy the beautiful landscape viewing the whole Valdambra. The small
graveyard situated about 2 km after the village is also quite interesting.
Itinerary 3 (on foot or by bicycle)
Pergine - Small Church of San Tommaso to and fro - km 6
From Pergine you head for the wood and then you take the path leading to the little church of
San Tommaso, a beautiful place hidden in nature where you can admire an incredible landscape
surrounded by silence and the cries of buzzards.
The small church, still intact, dates back to
the end of 13th Century, whereas the ancient convent and parsonage have only the walls left.
It is said that this place was a shelter for the pilgrims travelling on the ancient Francigena road.
On the way back down you’ll discover the ruins of an old medieval village, in a place that was
called “Poggio del tesoro” in 19th Century: indeed it is said that the monks of the convent had
hidden here their treasure, to save it from bandits.
Itinerary 4 (by car or by bicycle)
Pergine- Civitella to and fro - km 22
Taking the same road in the wood as described in Itinerary 3 and passing on the Chuch of
San Tommaso, you reach the nice village of Civitella della Chiana, where you can have a
snack and relax in the shade of the tower of La rocca. The tower marks the border between
the Valdambra and the Valdichiana and is one of the best preserved exemples of the many
Longobard castles built between 6th and 7th Century in strategic positions to control the
Centre of Italy. No words can describe the landscape from the walls in the clear days!
